The Sioux City Farmers Market is now open with a list of 49 total vendors. Due to the success of the Market this year, the vendor list has grown to 49 current vendors who have joined as annual or daily members. Joining a full range of produce vendors is now an array of complimentary products including jams and jellies, crafts, honey, meats, eggs, roasted coffees, breads and baked goods, pies, knitted clothing, jewelry, popped corn products, candy, wood furniture, art, handmade soaps and lotions, dried and fresh flowers, bedding plants, canned goods, food preparation accessories, spices and oils.
The continued influx of new vendors has allowed the Market to expand into nearly the entire site at the corner of Tri-View Avenue and Pearl Street. However, there is still ample parking at the site on the Tyson Center parking lot.
“We’ve also had some staffing changes.” Said Roger Caudron, Market Organizer. “Dee Polak has now joined us as the Market Coordinator. Megan Will has left us to join her family in their new home in the Des Moines area. Megan’s work during the first year of the Market and setting up for this year has been invaluable to our success.” Caudron added, “And we’re very pleased to have Dee stepping in to take over. We will be able to maintain stride this year because Dee’s vast experience with events in Downtown Sioux City will help take the Market to new levels.”
Caudron unveiled one of the new features of the Farmers Market - the Sioux City Farmers Market is now on Facebook. “The addition of our Facebook page gives us the opportunity to provide easy weekly updates.” Caudron said. “We were up to 80 friends and growing today. This will provide us an easy venue to get out information, updates, schedules and news and build a fan base that will transmit to new customers at the Market site.”
The Farmers Market continues to be open Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. until the end of October and is located on the Tyson Events Center parking lot at the corner of Pearl Street and Tri-View Avenue.
Now that the crop season is in full swing, the Market vendors are bringing in abundant supplies of fresh vegetables and fruits. “Sweet corn is in!” Caudron added.
Caudron did note that in spite of the growing abundance of product, the motto for the Farmers Market is still “You snooze, you lose.” He urged patrons to come early to get the best selection.
The Sioux City Farmers Market is a member of the Buy Fresh Buy Local coalition and all products featured are grown, produced, made or created within a 100-mile radius of Sioux City.
The Farmers Market is further partnering with the Iowa State Extension Service and their new Regional Foods Coordinator, Laura Kuennen. This partnership will help in the outreach efforts to build the vendor base for the Market and assist those producers in finding new markets for their products.
The Sioux City Farmers Market is made possible through the generous support from Presenting Sponsors, Great Southern Bank and St. Luke’s Health System. Additional sponsors include the City of Sioux City, Woodbury County Rural Economic Development, BPI, Inc., Weinberg Investments, Inc., Terra Industries, Avery Outdoor, State Steel and the Siouxland Chamber of Commerce and the Kind World Foundation.
